Just because I know Bryan loves lurid tales of sickness and woe…
Most of yesterday I was curled up in the fetal position with what I assume was a nasty case of food poisoning. I haven’t gotten any real sleep in 2 nights now, and I’m a little delirious.
But the downtime gave me a little time to watch some movies which was fun. Saw “The Fountain” and “Ghost Rider”. Ghost Rider was worth watching just for Nic Cage, who I really like. If they cut way down on his speaking while transformed, and completely cut out all the stupid “get this through your thick skull,” and “hey bonehead” puns, it would have been much better. As it is, it’s a decent throw away friday night flick.
Watching The Fountain was like doing pushups in your head as you desperately try to make sense of what’s happening on screen. It’s beautiful, and incredibly sad, and Hugh Jackman does a great job. Unfortunately I get really tired really quick of art-house pretension that isn’t incredibly well delivered. “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” delivered. Unfortunately The Fountain did not. And yes, I get it, all the rebirth, and death, and mayans.. yep, profound explorations of eternal themes, noted. But it just didn’t resonate with me as a film. It felt obtuse, but not for any clear purpose. In the end, I liked it, but felt like it could have been a better film.
I also got a new receiver to replace my old dying RCA. Hooked it up last night between bouts of nausea, and it looks and sounds good. The only lame thing is that I now need to get a amplified subwoofer.
