Fix0red

RAID is fixed up I think. I rebuilt the superblock and all the files are there and happy. Did a raidhotadd on the hdk1 again, and we’ll see how it is in the morning. It’s showing up still as the 5th drive in the raid, but I have learned that that makes no difference. If it’s still showing up as a missing device in the morning, I will try to back all the stuff up and blow it away, but it just may be another bad maxtor that works fine in Macs, but poops itself when facing a linux software raid 5. I’ve been using the disk in my mac for about 3 months now with no problems, but I guess we’ll see in the morning.

I have already started my planning on another RAID. Although it’s probably a while off. Basically I’m thinking about a server case with an SATA hot swap cage in the front of it. With the case I’m looking at I could do 2 5 bay hot swap cages and make a cool little raid 50. I could come in at just under 2TB. With some 250gb drives costing as low as $159 these days, it wouldn’t be terrible to build. Although the SATA versions are a bit more spendy.

I was kicking around the idea of 400gb SATA drives, but it just hurts me inside to loose 400gb to parity when you don’t absolutely have to. It’s better to just buy more drives. I could add 3 more drives to the current RAID and get more storage than 5 400gb drives.
