Thanks for the review. I am considering a Kindle and this was a big help. I do not like the idea of the iPad for the reasons you mentioned as well as the fact that I would be CONSTANTLY distracted from reading by other things on it. I do not need another thing to provide me with hours of time trolling the internet.

My only issue was that I formatted using Windows and got two mapped drives (E: & F:). Reformatting via the Dashboard merged those two. I have since purchased a Windows Home Server for fileserving. The Drobo is currently a media streamer. I optimized it with a software cache. Hiccups during video playbacks are rare now. I don't trust Drobo for anything else (not that it's ever given me a reason). Since the floppy days, I do know for sure that if you're working on a file copy it to your desktop first. Then copy it back to an external drive when you're finished with it. The constant read/write while working on files located on externals, floppies, CDs et al can kill the media or drive.

I'm having the same hum cycle you experienced. Such a nice concept and a nice looking piece in my office, but the noise is unbearable. I will attempt to move it, balance it and pad it to alleviate some of the noise. Oh well. My warranty just expired, so I'm stuck with it's current state.

I don't use middle-click, but I do miss triggering Exposé. I'm hoping Apple will introduce more gestures to the Magic Mouse. Perhaps a software update at some point?

At this point—and this is soooooo a first-world-problem—my biggest issue with the Magic Mouse is the large throw for the click.

But somehow I'm sure I'll survive.

So Apple actually offers 4 levels of font smoothing (i always used the light one, looks best on my lcd) but chose to only make 2 available with snow leo? Seriously, what a screwup.

Jaws,

As far as I know, the snow leopard default is "automatic". That means it will choose 0 if it doesn't detect an LCD and 2 if it does.

If you select 1, it should stay 1 for all monitors. To remove it, all you have to do is check or uncheck the font smoothing box in the appearance preferences, which will toggle it to automatic or off (0).

Joe, thanks for the reply. I'm trying to understand a little more about what this does. It seems as if the command adds a global AppleFontSmoothing key (where there wasn't one by default). Does this then override 10.6's default font smoothing handling for both monitors reporting themselves (such as a built-in MacBook or Apple display) as well as those that do not? So, if I set font smoothing at 1, it will stay at one for all displays, including those reporting correctly? To remove and completely revert back to 10.6's default handling, would it be necessary to remove the key (and if so, how)? Thanks!
